The RIB engine died on us. A horrible clanking noise coming out of it as we left Lulworth Cove on Sunday turned out to be one of the pistons chewing up the inside of its cylinder. We got towed back to Portland by a large commercial RIB, who was very helpful. Engine a write-off.

Quadra Island, Vancouver Sound, BC, Canada : 29th September - 6th October 2004

Many of us had wanted to go to Vancouver Sound for years, and this trip fulfilled those expectations. Its is cold water diving - the Sea temperature is never more than 10 degrees, but well worth it because the life is so different from that we see in the Altantic>. Different groups of fish dominate these seas. Members of the Scorpionfish family - Sculpins - have diversified to fill the niches that in European waters are occupied by the Cod family and by the Wrasses. Nudibranches abound in great variety, and like other groups of invertebrate are much larger than those we see in Europe. Chitons nearly 30cm long are common, as are huge Sea Pens a metre high, and there is also the Giant Octopus, of which we saw several. These are rumoured to reach 200 kilos in weight, but ours were all a metre across at the most, but that was still much bigger than the Common Octopus we see in our seas. I must also mention the local people, who were extremely welcoming without exception.
