Scapa Flow : 1st-6th June

1st June : The cruiser 'Dresden'
The Dresden lies almost
completely on its port side. Hull is intact apart from
one area midships where some of the engine was salvaged. The deck appears
to be separating from the hull in some places, and is slowly falling over.
The forward gun position is visible (but not the gun), fallen off, and
lying upside down on the bottom at 35m. Aft of that, quite a lot of
superstructure is intact, and some of the deck still has its planking.
Permanently buoyed both at bow and stern. Vis about 5m.

Peter aborted early, due to being very overweighted (at 20
kilos, possibly the heaviest diver in Scapa this year). Steve continued
in the company of other divers

|
1st June : The light cruiser
'Karlsruhr'
The
Karlsruhr lies on its starboard side. The stern can be entered and the
steering gear can be seen. A large bundle of electrical cable threads its
way through the stern compartments. Midships is a bit of a junkyard, more
so than indicated by the picture in 'Dive Scapa', but forwards the two guns
can still be seen, on the ends of their supporting trunking, and in place
in their gun-shields. Five-bearded Rockling seen on the bow. Vis about 8m.

2nd June : The light cruiser 'Koln'
The Koln lies on its
starboard side and is complete at the bows. Easy to penetrate the forwards
half, and an excellent dive inside all the way to the chain locker from
below the forwards rangefinder. Plenty of exits all the way. A possible
Pogge was seen on this, but what it was doing on top of a wreck is anybodys
guess. Vis about 6m outside and double that inside.

2nd June : Gunboat 'F2' and the Barge
The F2
is a gunboat. The bows are intact, and the forward gun is still there. The
F2 is joined to the Barge by a rope, which is a wooden bungalow sized
blockhouse, with many intact rooms. Facelina bostoniensis seen on the F2. Vis about 6m.

3rd June : Battleship 'KronzPrinz

A very
big piece of scrap metal. Not really possible to get a sense of the
ship-ness of it.

3rd June : Light cruiser 'Koln'
I think
the cruisers are the pick of the dives. Big enough to be very impressive,
but small enough to navigate by pilotage. Nice dive inside, and possible to
get a couple of decks down.

Another
very big piece of scrap metal. Possibly the best of the battleships, but
where we were on it I have no idea.

5th June : Blockship 'Tabarka'
Fantastic
dive. Once inside at the bow the vis was 15m. Huge engine hanging from the
ceiling (wreck is upside down) and started to find Nudibranches -
Coryphella lineata and Dendronotus frondosus.

6th June : Blockship 'Tabarka'
Excellent
once again. Having got our eye in, we slowly realised that there were not
just a lot of nudibranches on this wreck - it was covered in them,
including some of the biggest I've seen in British waters. D. frondosus up
to the length of my index finger. Nudibranches were falling off the
ceiling, dislodged by our bubbles, so it was almost literally raining them.
I had three on my kit when I got out, which is more than I see in total on
some dives.
