Holborn BSAC

HOLBORN 130 BRITISH SUB-AQUA CLUB 2003 SEASON

National Diving Centre, Chepstow : 16th March

Marshall: Nic Weeks: Shore dive

16 March : The shallow end of the NDC
A mightily impressive big hole in the ground, which will be great when its finished. Facilities are very good for temporary buildings, and considering the distance from the car-park to the water, it was a lot easier to get my twinset down there courtesy of the site's Land Rover than it would be from almost anywhere at Stoney Cove. The 'shallow' end is around 25m. Not much in the 10m range for Novices, but the shallow platforms are large and well made.

Dive cut short by DF's computer failure, otherwise we could quite happily have carried on, despite a water temperature of 6 degrees.

Scapa Flow : 1st-6th June

Marshall: Steve Taylor: John L

1st June : The cruiser 'Dresden'
The Dresden lies almost completely on its port side. Hull is intact apart from one area midships where some of the engine was salvaged. The deck appears to be separating from the hull in some places, and is slowly falling over. The forward gun position is visible (but not the gun), fallen off, and lying upside down on the bottom at 35m. Aft of that, quite a lot of superstructure is intact, and some of the deck still has its planking. Permanently buoyed both at bow and stern. Vis about 5m.

1st June : The light cruiser 'Karlsruhr'
The Karlsruhr lies on its starboard side. The stern can be entered and the steering gear can be seen. A large bundle of electrical cable threads its way through the stern compartments. Midships is a bit of a junkyard, more so than indicated by the picture in 'Dive Scapa', but forwards the two guns can still be seen, on the ends of their supporting trunking, and in place in their gun-shields. Five-bearded Rockling seen on the bow. Vis about 8m.

2nd June : The light cruiser 'Koln'
The Koln lies on its starboard side and is complete at the bows. Easy to penetrate the forwards half, and an excellent dive inside all the way to the chain locker from below the forwards rangefinder. Plenty of exits all the way. A possible Pogge was seen on this, but what it was doing on top of a wreck is anybodys guess. Vis about 6m outside and double that inside.

Excellent once again. Having got our eye in, we slowly realised that there were not just a lot of nudibranches on this wreck - it was covered in them, including some of the biggest I've seen in British waters. D. frondosus up to the length of my index finger. Nudibranches were falling off the ceiling, dislodged by our bubbles, so it was almost literally raining them. I had three on my kit when I got out, which is more than I see in total on some dives.

Firth of Clyde : 25th-28th July

Marshall: Steve Taylor: Hardboat
As a general rule, the wrecks in the Clyde are none tidal, so can generally be done at any time, although big springs can make problems on the Wallechia, for example. Visibility was good in the range 6-20m, and the water a lot warmer then expected. Above 6m, plankton rules, below 20m it gets dark anyway. The tourist wrecks we dived are pretty much recognisable as ships. There are dozens of other wrecks, either shallow/flattened things or gas dives below 50m.

25th July : The 'Akka'
The Akka is a steel motor vessel, launched in September 1942 and sunk with a cargo of iron ore in April 1956. It lies in the position 55 56'42"N, 004 54'21"W on the north side of Dunoon Bank. It is upright and pretty much intact, with maximum depths to seabed of 40m at the stern (v dark) and 30m at the well decorated bow. The bridge and the engine room are the most interesting bits of the wreck. Visibility 5-8m and temperature 17c.

25th July : The 'Greenock'
The Greenock was launched in 1876 and sank in November 1902 after hitting a steamer. It was a steam hopper dredger. It lies in a general depth of 30m in the position 55 55'57"N, 004 53'34"W south west of Cloch Lighthouse. Shallowest part of the wreck is about 20m. The hull is intact, but the deck structures are collapsing. The buckets can be seen quite easily. There is plenty to see on the wreck. Visibility was around 5m and water temperature 18c.

26th July : The 'Beagle'
The Beagle was launched in 1864and sank in November 1865. It was an iron steamship. The wreck lies off the north west of Great Cumbrae at 55 47'18"N, 04 56'34"W. It lies in 34-38m of water with the shell of the hull at 30-32m ish. The hull is a shell with only the collapsed bridge structure and parts of the bow and stern deck still intact. It is possible to swim through the bridge structure without any difficulty. Visibility was 5m+ and water temperature was 13c - noticeably cooler than previous dives.

26th July : The 'Lady Isabella'
An iron barque launched in August 1882 and sank in August 1902 near Gull Point to the south of little Cumbrae. Position is 55 42'42"N, 04 57'24"W. The flattened wreck lies on a sloping seabed from 5 to 15 m with only plates and decking remaining. Lots of wildlife on it, if you like that sort of thing. Visibility 5-10m and water temperature 15c.

27th July : The 'Wallechia'
An iron steamship launched in March 1883 and sits on a muddy bottom at 34m. She sank in September 1894 at 55 51'41"N, 04 57'07"W. Depth to deck is 30m. A very much intact wreck with lots of easily identifiable structures and some excellent swimthro's (not for the feint hearted!). It is also quite silty, despite being one of the wrecks most prone to tidal movement in this area. The cargo has been a constant attraction since the wreck was first dived in 1977, and a number of divers have lost their lives searching for gin, whisky and beer bottles. Visibility was 3-5m and water temperature was 16c.

28th July : The 'Europa'
An 424t iron steamship, 206m long launched in March 1862 and sank in October 1884 approximately 3/4 mile north of Cloch Point in position 55 57'06"N and 04 52'03"W. It sits upright with the seabed at 40m at the stern to 30m at the bow. Average depths on the deck are 32m. Much of the superstructure has been removed or has decayed and all that is left is the hull and decking with some winches etc. Lying out of the tide, it is siltier and therefore darker than the rest of the wrecks described - needless to say it is one of my favourites! Visibility nil-2m. Water temperature 16c.

A return to Ustica for the second time this year. I think we like this place. Marred a bit by bad weather and a massive rush to get the ferry or get stuck... but that's diving.

17th October : North of Punta Spalmatore
Wind meant boat couldn't get out of harbour, so rather than sit twiddling thumbs, went for a shore dive. It was okay by Ustican standards, fantastic by UK standards! An excellent training site for novices - big flat area of rock in 6-8m with 20m+ viz and no silt.
