3rd August : The 'French Barque'
The weather was spot on, not a breath of wind so we had another 45 minute ride out to the site. Jerry dropped the shot (self-shortener) right into the bow section next to the anchor. Vis was a good 4-5m and the coarse white sand reflected the light so that you didn't need a torch unless you wanted to look into one of the broken mast sections and scare the, bloody huge, congers hat are living there. She lies NE - SW and much of her is buried with sections rising out of the seabed. From the look of it the hull, on each side, may have collapsed inwards. On the port side there was a large section of the hull lying flat on the seabed on top of which are the railings. In the centre are numerous broken mast sections, dead eyes, hawsers and cleats. Mostly it is flat but some sections stand 2-4 metres proud. Traces of her shape can be seen in the seabed. She really is a lovely wreck.

The IoM provided some excellent diving. Not even the marshal anticipated it being this good. Vis was 10m at worst, often better, and there were good wrecks to be dived at all depths. The last day was blown out, unfortunately, so the 'City of Liverpool' in 44m could not be visited, but that is also a very good dive by all accounts.

25th August 2002 : The 'Afton'
The 'Afton' was a steam sailer lost in a storm in 1897. She lies on a reef at approximately 30m, with her stern off the reef partly buried in a coarse sand bottom. Two boilers stand about 3m proud. Vis was at least 10m, allowing all divers on the wreck to be clearly visible to each other. Lobsters wandered about unconcerned, and some large Pollack and Ballan Wrasse hovered in amongst the wreckage. An excellent dive.

25th August 2002 : 'Little Ness'
A reef inshore of the 'Afton' - about 3 miles south of Douglas Harbour. Very weedy wreckage in the top 10m, leading down to a prop shaft lying down to 20m. Kelp down to about 15m. Many Nudibranches (Aeolids mainly) on Nemertesia down at 20m, and scallops all over the sandy slope off the reef. Good dive, with a very good encounter with an octopus reported, and many fish.

26th August 2002 : The Paddle Wheel.
A most remarkable wreck - the paddle wheel of a large paddle steamer, which fell off the ship, and now lies on a flat seabed. About 10m across, this is covered in plumose anemones and is home to huge shoals of Bib, Poor Cod, and Conger Eels. Vis was a stunning 15-20m.

27th August 2002 : Sugarloaf Caves.
Very nice scenic dive off Spanish Head. Starts with a 60m penetration of a sea-cave, followed by a short swim through kelpy gulleys to another cave, penetrating right through a buttress of Spanish Head for about 100m, but with a clear surface above, and another exit on the seaward side halfway through. On the other side one exits near a stack, and can swim around that in about 10m. Not much affected by the tide, but a distinct surge moved us through the second cave.

Thursday 29th August 2002 : 'Octavia'
A really beautiful dive. A trawler, sunk by collision in 1920. Upright, intact, with the prop in place, and the wheelhouse still on the deck. Covered in Metridium anemones in white orange and green, teeming with fish and lobsters. One can swim in through the gash in the starboard forward quarter left by the collision, into the hold, past the boiler, and into the engine room. And all in 25m with 10m visibility.
