Baltimore, Co. Cork, Eire : 15th-21st July 2001

Marshall: Steve Milner: Red Dragon. Skipper: Gene Macarthy
A week in South-West Ireland, repeating last years successful trip

15th July : Alondre
Very broken up wreck (sunk 1916), with its bows hard up on Kedge Rocks in 6m. Anchor Chain in a gully leads out to broken frames, then a huge cranckshaft and engine casing with valve parts in 16m. Boilers are deeper, and appear to have rolled there from original position forwards, to their current position in 20m. Wreckage ends at about 25m.

Very kelpy shallow, but an excellent dive on a rocky drop-off below 15m. Very large Cliona sponges and Rose Coral, lots of Devonshire Cup Coral, and Nemertesia with Fairy Shrimp and Sea-Spiders in its fronds. Many Leopard Spotted Goby and Squat Lobster in crevices. Some evidence of Octopus predation on Crabs.

17th July : South West corner of Sherkin Island

20th July : Point on Sherkin Island, near the Marine Research Station
Bad weather forced us into the shelter of Sherkin Island again. Gene picked a point out of the tide and swell, and we dived it as an unknown quantity. The site is the west side of the point near the marine research station, and here there is a flat sand bottom in 16m, giving over abruptly to a granite reef rising straight out of the sand. Turning South towards the point gives an indifferent dive, but turning North leads to a series of rocky gullys cutting across the reef, which is an excellent sheltered dive.

Depth: 17, Time: 67 (3)

Littlehampton : 28th-29th July 2001

Marshall: Nick Weeks: Holborn Diver
Unbelievably good weather. Absolute flat calms on both days allowed us to reach two wrecks 18m from Littlehampton. The Leopold has been a target for at least three years, and the French Barque has interested a number of people for at least as long.

28th July : The 'Prince Leopold'
A huge wreck, with much of the teak decking still in place. Engine room is accessible through large hatch openings in the deck. There are definitely two wrecks here - another smaller one, possiby the German Destroyer, is right at the bow of the Leopold. Vis was about 4m.

Another large wreck. A steel hulled sailing vessel lying on its side and partially buried in sand. The masts were steel tubes, at least at the bottom, and lie out to the side, harbouring the biggest Conger Eels I have ever seen. There is a distinct counter-stern, and a large anchor on the bow.
