2009 Dive Season

We have an exciting year ahead. Best news of all, we are buying a new RIB.
We have (finally) made our decision and will be buying a 6.5m XS boat from Barnet Marine. This will give us much more space than the old boat, and with the additional bottle rack, everyone will be much more comfortable.
Even better, we have ordered a fantastic GPS/Chart/Side Scan Sonar for the boat. Claims that 'we will never miss the wreck again' are a little ambitious, perhaps. It would be better to say that we are less likely to miss the wreck (but we'll probably still miss slack water).

The new RIB will be based in Littlehampton next year, with dive trips organised for all neap weekends, and a few springs.
We also have a number of longer trips planned including the Medas Islands in Spain (June), North Devon and Lundy (July), The Isle of Mann (Aug) and Southern Red Sea (Sept).
We also have an excellent range of courses including all the diver grades, oxygen admin and boat handling.

Dive clubs become the first to twin

MUG and Holborn twinning Mauritius Underwater Group BSAC 322 and Holborn BSAC 130 have officially twinned in a gesture of international friendship between divers.

The central London based club met with MUG's President Cassamjee Buchoo at the beginning of the year to discuss how best to collaborate, and hit on the idea of being twinned.

Cassamjee Buchoo explained the advantages of new initiative "As a BSAC branch based in Mauritius, we value our links with British diving. This new initiative should help strengthen those links through friendship, and exploring our common diving interests."

"MUG has a number of ex-pat divers who may return to the UK and want to dive, and they are always welcome at Holborn. Our branch is planning a trip to Mauritius to dive with MUG and we're hoping to hold a joint underwater photography workshop." Added Mike Maloney, President of Holborn branch.

Two identical brass plaques celebrating the twinning have been created and will be displayed at the MUG clubhouse and at the Oasis pool in WC2, where Holborn meet.

Both branches came into being in 1964 and have a strong history of exploration and achievement.

Mauritius Underwater Group was formed around the search for the HMS Sirius, a 5th Rate Frigate which took part in the Battle of Trafalgar, and was sunk during the battle of Vieux Grand Port in Mauritius. The club carried out an archaeological survey of the wreck and has participated on several archaeological projects since then. HMS Sirius is still dived regularly by the club.

Holborn dive club¹s West End position made it a favourite with actors; previous celebrity members include Roger Moore and Kenneth Moore. The branch also organises the annual Wacky swimming Olympics competition for central London based clubs.

What does twinning mean?
Twinning is a formal statement of friendship and mutual interest. In practical terms it means that members of the two dive clubs are welcome to dive with, and be treated as members of each other's branch.
